Poking the Bear
Soooo I have decided that in order to really talk about the process needed to truly love, that it is important to bear my soul. Not all of what we go through, but the pain of experience and the lessons I have learned because of the journey.
I am a romantic at heart and so is my husband. Put the two of our personalities together and we can become quite volatile. Boring we are not, but we are definitely honest and that is the beauty of deepening passion and compassion for each other. He is my anchor when I feel overwhelmed, my mirror of accountability, and let's just face the reality...having somebody expose the imperfect areas of your life sucks when you allow God to use your marriage as a means to detox the crap out of your life.
Despite my husband's occasional irritation with me, he still pursues me and that just blows me away. There have been a few fights where I have threatened to leave because of pride and fears about our future, and the devastation on his face was enough to convey to me just how deeply he loved and still loves me.
Marriage isn't a picnic, but I would not change a thing or the choices I have made. Yes, my husband gets angry with me, but he is also quick to forgive. Some of his buddies at work call him a Polar Bear. He may look cuddly and cute, but he is also quick to protect hearth, home and the ones he loves...
Don't provoke him. I am the only one allowed to poke this bear.....

The Drunk Leprachaun
I work in a bookstore part-time and had an interesting encounter today with a drunk guy wearing a leprechaun hat. Around 11 am I was standing behind the cash register ringing up a couple of customers when this character walks in and asked us "what on earth we did with the place?!" I asked him to clarify what he meant, so he responded by asking me "where our movies had been moved to?!" I pointed him across the store and continued to wait on customers.
A couple of minutes later I was ringing up another guy (who was standing there with his little girl), when the guy who asked about the movies walked up to the cash register and asked me where he could find a copy of "Animal House". Um...ok. I work in a Christian bookstore, so I wasn't quite sure if he was trying to pick a fight or not with us. If so, he is messing with the wrong woman. Most people who know me understand that I can be pretty feisty and that I will speak my mind when provoked. Doesn't matter if it is an Old Baptist who argues a moot point about a KJV Bible being THE ONLY translation or a mouthy, cranky woman...I will sweetly put a person in their place without realizing they have just been verbally smoked....but I digress.
Very calmly, I told him that we didn't sell the movie because of the content in it. He mouthed back to me a "why not?" "What's wrong with it?" I told him "I wasn't going to get into it with him". He asked me "why not" again. um..ok. You wanna play that game....let's play. By this time the man I had been waiting on had had enough and turned at looked at Mr Saint Patty's Day and told him that "he was out of line and needed to knock it off". Mr Leprechaun responded back with..."whatever, it's a great movie, just don't let your daughter watch it (mind you she is two)". That ticked off my customer who told the guy to leave.
I could smell the alcohol on Mr Saint Patty's Day's breath....from TEN FEET AWAY. It finally dawned on me why he asked if we had a copy of Animal House. My store used to be a Hollywood Video. The guy was so inebriated that he couldn't tell the difference even though the outside of my store has HUGE letters on it that say 'Christian Store'. Once he tottered out the door, the guy got into his SUV and when I saw him do that, I turned to my manager and said "Is he getting ready to drive? Somebody needs to get his license plate!" At that point the man I was waiting on, called his wife over, walked outside to the back of Mr Leprechaun's SUV and got on his cellphone to call somebody about Mr St Patty's Day. Thinking he was just capturing the license plate and calling it in, I didn't notice the badge he had under his clothing until he turned around. WHOA, my customer was an off duty cop who had had enough. Needless to say Mr off duty cop had two police cars quickly show up, Mr Leprechaun got a good butt chewing and all in all it looked like his luck ran out. The only thing I am happy about is he didn't drive and hurt somebody else, because had he walked anywhere, I am pretty sure he would have run them over too.
Nutty people sure make a crazy day fun...even if they are a few days early for St Patty's Day. Top of the Morning to Ya!

Restrepo
If you have not seen this documentary yet, I highly recommend it. It is a powerful documentary covering the deployment of a platoon embedded in one of the most dangerous places in Afghanistan. As a military wife we pray for the protection of not just our Soldier, but for all people deployed away from their loved ones.

The Way He Looks at Me
You can tell a lot about a couple by the way they look at each other when they think the other person is not paying attention. My husband is one such person. He may not be Soldier of the Year...but he's my soldier of the century and that is all that matters. When we are laying in bed just chit chatting or holding each other, the way he looks at me is enough to melt butter. It is with eyes full of grace, compassion, care, love and adoration. Nevermind that I am a very difficult person to get along with...opinionated, moody, extroverted, and loud. Nevermind that I am carrying around a few extra pounds. He loves me fully, deeply and completely.
I nag him about a lot of things. Like any couple, we argue but are working on communicating better with each other. Despite all my flaws, he still romances me. Yesterday morning I woke him up groaning in pain. I was dead asleep. Very quietly he grabbed my hand and held on to it until I was quiet again. A couple of hours later, he slipped out of the bed, went downstairs, grabbed me a couple of ibuprofen for the pain in my body and a glass of water. I didn't have to ask.
A few years ago my only definition of romance swayed in the direction of roses, walks on the beach, and intimate conversation over a candlelight dinner. Things have changed just a bit. I still love the flowers, beach and dining by candlelight, but to me the intimacy of life is being able to recognize my husband's love in the midst of my pain.
Intimacy is more than sex. It is being passionately devoted to somebody and being fully vulnerable to them. He is my soulmate and the jewel in my crown.

God is Love
My life does not depend on whether or not I perform a bunch of good deeds in order to make God happy. The essence of who He is....is simply love.
No matter what the world does, thinks, acts or commands, without the expression of love....they have failed in their mission. True love is not self seeking. BUT, it is always seeking the greater good of others. The purest most perfect form of love is God and His son Jesus fulfilled God's mission by dying to redeem mankind, not dying to kill mankind. What happens if you die, gain the whole world and lose your soul? No prophet can save you, no religious teacher is willing to take your place. Our lives are but a little breath of passing air, yet God cares enough for you to create you and love you with all of you imperfections. Radical behavior is loving in a world full of hate and revenge. Holiness is modeling your imperfect life after God's.....knowing you are imperfect, yet He still loves you perfectly.
Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful;it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails.....I Corinthians 13:4-8
