Creamed Corn and Rice. My twist.....

I took a Southen Living recipe and made it my own. The reviews are in and the people have spoken....it was a hit. So for those of you who love TRUE Southern cooking and none of that fancy stuff, here it is...

Ingredients:

4 cans Creamed Corn
2- 8 oz packages of cream cheese
4 TBS water
2 TBS sugar
1 8 oz package shredded cheddar cheese...I used sharp
1 cup of Parmesan cheese
2 cups Uncle Ben's Rice
1/4 c salted butter

Prepare:

Throw all ingredients into a crockpot and cook for four hours until ready. I gave it a stir every hour just to make sure the cheese was melted through.

Enjoy!

Publix Shopping Trip 04-17 savings of 67%

Before you judge, keep in mind I buy most of my meats and produce at the base commissary so this is the rest of it. With rising food prices, I get my savings however I can.

2 BREYERS HALF GALLON ICE CREAM…bogo plus a Target $1.50 off web coupon knocked it down to $2 per half gallon. Normal price: $5.98 each!!!

Birdseye Steamfresh Veggies were 50% off. Using a $1 off of 3 brought it down to under $.60 a bag. Normal price: $1.90 each.

Kellog's Pop Tarts: BOGO. Using a $1 off of 3 brought it down to $.66 a box. Normal price: $1.98 each.

Pedigree Dogfood (4.4lbs) Normally $4.99. Store savings of $1 off plus $3 off coupon made them $.99 each.

Pedigree WetDog food: Normally $.77 a can. Coupon for BOGO knocked it down to $.38 a can.

Lipton 100ct Ice Tea Bags: Normally $3.39 a box. Bogo and with $1 off of each box made it $.70 a box.

Wesson Oil: Normally$4.29 a bottle. BOGO and wih a $.60 off coupon for each bottle made it $1.50 a bottle.

Jimmy Dean Sausage: Normally $3.50 each. Store sale was 2/$6 and with $1 off of 2 made it $2.50 per roll. Not much of a savings, but we make a lot of sausage and eggs for breakfast, so I needed to restock it back up.

Ritz Munchables: Normally $2.99 a box. BOGO this week. Used a $1 off coupon for each box, paid $.50 a box.

Idahoan Mashed Potatoes: Normally $1.25 each. BOGO this week. Had a $1 off of three and paid $.29 a bag.

Land o'Lakes. Not on sale, but paid $1.09 with a $1 off coupon.

Smart Balance Spread: Normally $2.99 per container. BOGO this week, had a $1 off of two making it $1 per container.

Coffee Mate Creamer: Normally $1.62 each. This week was 4 for $6. Using 2 x $1 off coupons for two, knocked it down to $1 each.

Dole Canned Pineapple: Normally $1.55 each. BOGO this week. Had $.50 off of two. Doubles up to $1 off. Makes it $.27 a can.

Yesterday, I used an in ad coupon for $10 off of a $50 American Express giftcard. With a $4.95 activation fee, I am getting $50 worth of gift card for $45.05 and making back $5.05 per card.

My total purchases today were $174.92 with tax. Using store sales, manufacturer's q's (coupons) and the savings off of the gift card, I saved $114.90 and only paid $62.70.

I am not looking to buy $1000 worth of groceries for $150, but 8 am looking to save at least half when I grocery shop. Considering the cot of rising food prices, I will take the savings any way I can get them.

How do you save money?

No Death Benefits For Those KIA If Gov't Shuts Down.

This makes me angrier than having to wait for our family's midmonth pay and beyond. These families make the Ultimate Sacrifice and our Elected officials cannot agree on a budget 6 months into a fiscal year. Sickening!

Military Report - Bill Would Protect Military Pay

Military Report - Bill Would Protect Military Pay

The Commissary Prices

I get a kick out of going to the commissary sometimes.  It seems like every single time I go, I inevitably run into the same people week after week and without fail, it always seems to be the same crew of retired Veterans and their wives.  I love hearing their stories of the days when they served and especially love seeing their chests puff out in pride about how they served.

I love their meat prices.  Seriously, I went in there a few days ago and chicken breasts were $1.39 a pound.  I can't even get that at Publix on a day when they are on sale.  The closet they get is $1.99 a pound and even then I refuse to buy them.  Today the hubby and I grilled up some steaks we picked up there for less than $3 a pound and they were delicious paired alongside a heaping pile of onions and mushrooms sauteed in my cast iron skillet. We are eating like kings and I haven't even used a coupon in there yet.  For those who know me on a daily basis, I am always looking for a deal and am not afraid to stock up on things if it is super inexpensive.

So, in an effort to save a little time and money, I decided that from now on I am using Publix for their BOGO (Buy One Get One) Deals and the commissary (with my coupons) for everything else.  The only thing that stinks is that I wish they were open on Mondays like the rest of the freaking world, but once again, I digress.

What kinds of deals do you find at your Commissary?

Silence is Golden

One of my favorite things to do at night is lay in bed and read a book. Since my hubby has gotten back, it has been a lot harder to do. He likes to get to sleep much earlier than I do, but also likes to spend as much time with me as possible. To effectively problem solve this issue, I downloaded the Kindle application to my Droid phone and turned the reader to black with white lettering so as not to disturb his rest. So far it has been working out great. I get to read well into the night and he sleeps soundly beside me.

One of my favorite things about this experience is feeling his breath lightly dancing across my bare shoulder in an air kiss. As his sleep deepens, his breath starts to slow and I find myself relaxing in its rhythm. I treasure these moments because I know that he will deploy again one day and I will be left with memories and the scent of his cologne as gentle reminders. The silence is golden and the experience is priceless.
